With soaring fuel prices and the prospect of long term oil shortages, fuel economy has assumed a new importance when choosing a new car. Most people now list fuel economy as being one of the deciding factors in their car selection.
Here is a list of what we believe to be the five most fuel efficient cars available in the UK. It should be noted that the fuel consumption figures are based on manufacturers data rather than on independent tests.
At the top of the list of the most fuel efficient cars available in the UK is the
cdi. Although Smart Cars are not at the head of everybody’s list when it comes to style, there is no denying that despite it being only a two seater and has a cranky diesel engine the Fortwo cdi is extremely economical, On average it can return 85.6 mph and if you really try hard you can get even better economy.
Number two on our list is the Skoda Fabia Greenline which is classed as a super-mini. It is amazingly economical with an average fuel consumption of 83.1 mpg which is almost as economical as the Smart Fortwo cdi yet with the capacity to carry five people.
The third car on our list is the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion. This car looks like a small version of the Golf Polo and actually uses the same engine as the Skoda Fabia Greenline listed above. It also offers a similar economy with an average fuel consumption of 80.7 mpg.
The fourth car on the list is the Toyota Auris HSD (which stands for Hybrid Synergy Drive). This car is a hybrid and uses a 1.8 litre petrol engine in combination with an electric motor. The fuel consumption is excellent and returns on average 74.3 mpg. The car is manufactured in the UK.
Toyota also manufactures the fifth car on our list, the Toyota Prius T3. The Prius was the first really green hybrid car and for a while it achieved a special celebrity status. It is available in a number of trims, but the most economical is the T3 which will return an average of 72.4 mpg. It is very similar to the Auris HSD listed above though it has slightly different styling.
