Overview: That the Alfa Romeo Brera is a beautiful car is undeniable, but there was a time when this car might not have existed at all. Initially it was a design concept car and it was based on the design of a Maserati but such was the public response that Alfa made the decision to produce a road car version of the Brera coupe style. It has significant similarities to the Alfa Romeo 159 including many of the components, though it is considerably sportier even in its basic formats.

Engines: There are a number of engine options. The 2.2 litre engine is fairly standard and develops 185 bhp. This will cover 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds. There is also a five cylinder turbocharged diesel engine option, the 2.4JTDm. Earlier versions of this engine could deliver 200 bhp but this was later increased to 210 bhp and this has a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 8.0 seconds. It also has excellent torque above 2,000 rpm. There is also a 3.2-litre V6 engine that provides 260bhp and gives a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 6.8 seconds.

The latest addition to the engine range is a 1.75 litre TBi which delivers 200 bhp and will cover 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds. This is matched to a manual six speeed gearbox and the car has a top speed of 146 mph.

Driving: The first thing you notice from the Brera is the Alfa Romeo roar. How is it that every engine they put in this car sounds great? Handling is fine, though the car is set up for comfortable cruising rather than hard driving and there is a tad too much body roll in tight bends. Certainly the car is comfortable and there is a surprising amount of space for a small coupe. There is plenty of boot space too.

Economy: The Brera is not a particularly economical car. The diesel version is the cheapest to run and can deliver 40 mpg, but the smaller petrol engines deliver under 30 mpg and the V6 around 22 mpg.

The Volkswagen Golf has attained iconic status and has rightly claimed its place as a modern classic alongside vehicles such as the Mazda MX5. The Golf is a high performance hatchback offering first rate performance available to the common man. It is renowned for its onus on quality, handling and performance. Due to its sporty performance you should gather car insurance quotes from the internet to avoid paying too much for this high insurance group vehicle.

The current Golf is the 6th generation of the vehicle illustrating its popular legacy. It was first produced in 1974 and has been a mainstay on our roads ever since. The 6th generation Golf is nearly twice as heavy as its early predecessors showing the drastic evolution of the car. Despite the changes the present Volkswagen Golf has somehow managed to stay true to its roots.

The current Golf is as highly acclaimed as ever. The engine has moved from the humble 1100CC offerings of the 70’s. The 2011 Golf engines peak at a 2.5 litre petrol model. The much vaunted 2litre diesel promises to be the most popular. The diesel is a practical and high performance option due to its exceptional fuel economy. The Bluemotion technology can muster 62.8mpg. It offers huge torque and 145hp, enhancing the Golf’s reputation as a performance compact.

The interior of the Golf has a robust refined feel. Quality oozes from every fixture. Minor details in other cars become all important in the Golf, keen to demonstrate its ability to produce finely engineered cars.

The Golf has always been reasonable due to its ‘compact’ classification. It’s available from just £15,850. Whatcar voted it the 2011 Small Family Car of the Year highlighting its versatility. It is popular with young motorists as a realistic chance to own a high performance car. Insurance can be costly so trawl the net for car insurance quotes.

The Chevrolet Aveo 1.3 VCDi Ecodiesel is the diesel version of the new Supermini. The car is mid-priced and is in the same class as Ford Fiesta but with substantially more internal space and with a particularly good fuel economy.

The engine is 1.3 litres and delivers a reasonably 94 bhp, which is hardly boy racer stuff but it is perfectly adequate of every day motoring in town and for motorway cruising. Once the revs reach 1750 rpm you find that there is plenty of torque right through the rest of the rev range but at very low revs the car feels quite sluggish which is not surprising given that it is optimised for economy rather than for a fast get-away from the lights.

For an eco-diesel the engine is both smooth and quiet; there is also a noticeable lack of vibration during acceleration. The new aerodynamic shape also serves to reduce wind noise to quite surprisingly low levels.

The ride is reasonably comfortable even over fairly bumpy surfaces. The car is very manoeuvrable in tight situations thanks to the quite light steering, though you might find it a little too light at higher speeds. Parking is very easy.

At speed the handling is a little disappointing and there is noticeable body roll in tight corners.

Where the Aveo scores over the competition is internal space. There is ample headroom even for exceptionally tall occupants and there is plenty of legroom even for rear seat passengers. Boot space is fairly typical of a car in this class.

The driving position is quite high which means that there is excellent visibility and all the controls and instruments are easily accessible and visible.

Chevrolet has priced the Aveo 1.3 VCDi Ecodiesel very competitively and is significantly cheaper than the Fiesta. There is a good selection of equipment including air-con, alloys, remote locking and so forth.

Very importantly the Ecodiesel has low running costs. It returns an average fuel consumption of 78.5 mpg and CO2 emissions are 95 g/km which means that there is zero road tax.

If you are looking for a new or nearly-new Chevrolet Aveo 1.3 VCDi Ecodiesel then why not let motors.co.uk find one close to where you are located?

If you are buying a car in Scotland you should be aware of the Guidance for second hand car dealers that was published recently by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) – have a look for more information at motors.co.uk/. This is a set of requirements for used car dealers to ensure that they comply with ˜The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations and ˜The Sale of Goods Act.

Essentially these guidelines state the level of service you should reasonably expect to receive from your car dealer. It is beyond the scope of this article to delve very deeply into these guidelines, but here are a few of the more salient features.

Car dealers must not give false information or insufficient information to their customers and they must not use overly aggressive sales techniques. Practices which are considered to be unfair are those that are likely to make a car buyer make a decision that is different from what they would otherwise have done. Examples of these are: viewing a car they wouldn’t have viewed; buying a car that they wouldn’t have; pay more money that they wished to; not make a valid complaint. These apply to pre-sales, during the sale, and after sales; they also apply to purchases made by the dealer as well as sales.

Under the Sales of Goods Act it is a requirement that the dealer ensures that the car is of a reasonable quality which means that is should fairly reflect a reasonable quality anticipated by its age, its value, its history, its mileage, the use for which it is intended, the manufacturer, the durability of that model, safety, and that is as described.

The dealer is also required to ensure that he has the right to sell the car. This means that he must carry out checks that the car is not subject to any finance arrangement such as HP.

If you buy a car from a dealer in Scotland who is in breach of any of the above there are a number of remedies that you can take. In Scotland these remedies are possible for any car purchased in the last 5 years (though in England and Wales it is 6 years) though you will need to show that the fault existed at the time of purchase.

The Fiat 500 is one of the most stylish cars on the road today. It exudes a Parisian Chic, with the styling finesse of a kitsch continental city classic. Both the Mini and the Fiat 500 have been a roaring success since their rebirth but there is something about the 500 that gives it an added elegance.

The car has a bubble like shape with rounded features aplenty. Where in some cars too many curves can look non-descript, it really works with the 500. Some cars today may be over styled but the 500 harks back to an era of simpler designs. It follows a clean line with no knobbly bumpers or overbearing headlights. Whereas some city cars look cute, the 500 looks fashionable.

The 500 is the perfect city car and starting at £9,900 it represents good value. The car is built on the same production line as the highly acclaimed Panda but where the Panda is finished with practicality in mind the 500 is more of a fashion accessory with facades and gizmos giving a retro feel.

Fiat hasn’t always had the best reputation for quality of finish but the 500 could be set to change that perception. The finish is robust and high quality with furnishings appearing nicely crafted.

There are a range of petrol and diesel engines to choose from. The 1.4 Abarth 16V Turbo is the top of the range model but there are plenty of everyday 1000cc and 1.2 models to choose from.

The success of the Fiat 500 comes at a time when the Mini and the Beetle have also made successful comebacks. The appetite for kitsch small cars seems insatiable and the Fiat 500 could be the pick of the bunch. For fashionable types it seems to be the car of choice and on a purely practical level it could be pound for pound the best in class.

The Volkswagen Jetta is looked upon as a vehicle that comes right in the middle between a luxury vehicle and those seeking a practical car. This year brings a price that is more exciting than ever, with models starting at just under sixteen thousand dollars. Models less than twenty thousand dollars have been nearly impossible to find,

Though the models have been decreased, the performance of the traditional Jetta has been increase. You may wonder the reason that the price has decreased, but the performance has increased – and this simple reason is that Volkswagen is seeking to increase the sales of the Jetta as one of the compact cars that is going to be reign in popularity in North America.

The reduction in the price will leave the Volkswagen Jetta one of the leading brands that can compete with other models less than twenty thousand dollars that do not sacrifice the power and appearance within the vehicle that has been chosen.

While decreasing the price, the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta does not compromise the power that is found within the vehicle. The 2.0 L is still as powerful as previous models that were more expensive. City models were equipped with this higher level of power in the past – but newer models retain this power found previously only the city models. Drivers no longer have to worry about the lack of power found within less expensive vehicles – as the Jetta is offering the city power your need, in a pleasing package. Jetta’s and many other brilliant VW’s can be found at Motors online.

When you first get your driving license the first thing you want to do is go out and buy a new car. Even if you have the budget for a brand spanking new car, there are many benefits in going for a used car instead.

The first major benefit to buying used cars is the cost. Most new drivers are young people who do not want to be saddled with the cost of paying for a new car. Even if they can get finance on their car, the cost of buying new could leave them in debt for many years. If you buy a car on motors.co.uk you will find many great second hand cars for sale.

New drivers also have to think about depreciation costs. New cars can depreciate in value by as much as 40 per cent in their first year alone and as much as 60 per cent after three years. This means, that when it comes to selling on a car, they could find it has lost a lot of its value. However, with second hand cars the original owner is the one who has been hit by depreciation costs, not the new driver.

The other issue to bear in mind is the cost of insurance. New drivers, especially younger ones, are already hit with higher premiums than more experienced drivers because they are more prone to accidents. However, the cost of insuring a new car is also more expensive than insuring a second hand one. Therefore, for many young drivers, the cost of insuring a new car could be far too expensive. With a second hand car this will at least drive down some of the costs.

What’s more, new drivers are more prone to accidents, so getting a used car is a good idea while they get used to driving. Dents and bangs in a shiny new car straight off the forecourt can be devastating and is not going to help the depreciation value.

There are a number of reasons why buying a used car is best for new drivers and buying used means that they will not only pay less for the car, but also for their insurance and, with the cost of motoring rising, every little helps.

Arguably the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer is one of the best estate cars that Vauxhall has ever made. Essentially this car replaces the Vectra Estate and it looks heaps better. In fact it is a far more stylish car all round and altogether of a higher class. Perhaps that is why Vauxhall preferred the name Sports Tourer to Estate; it does sound considerably more sophisticated, and this car is. On the downside, although this car is essentially an estate, there is not as much carrying capacity as there was in some of the previous Vauxhall estate models. This car is also available as a four wheel drive version for certain engine configurations. All specifications and models can be found on www.motors.co.uk.

There are both diesel and petrol versions available but the most popular are the diesels of which there are two choices. There is a 2.0 litre CDTi which is available in two degrees of tuning, either a 130 bhp model which has a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 10.9 seconds or a 160 bhp model with a 0 to 62 mph time of 9.3 seconds. Neither are startling, but are adequate for a family estate. There are available with six speed manual or automatic gear boxes.

There is a 140 bhp 1.8 litre petrol engine, a 180bhp 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, a 220 bhp 2.0 litre turbo and a 2.8-litre V6 capable of delivering 260 bhp, which is the one you should choose if you really want your car to live up to all that the name sports tourer implies, but not if fuel economy is important to you.

Handling cannot be described as sporty and on the road this car feels like a typical Vauxhall estate car, but then it was never designed for throwing round corners. It is very comfortable and relatively quiet; climate control is standard.

When the seats are folded down there is 540 litres of storage space which is a little more than most competing estate cards such as the Ford Mondeo. There are electrically operated tailgate options and a feature that you will welcome have you ever opened the tailgate of an estate in a low multi-storey car park; there is a part-opened stopping point to prevent the tailgate being damaged by a low ceiling.

The Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer does what is says on the tin and should not disappoint.

The BMW manufactured MINI Clubman is essentially a sports tourer version of the MINI and compared with the MINI there is much more space all round and especially in the back. The luggage compartment is accessed van style by split rear doors. Altogether the car looks great and is a lot of fun to own and drive.

The entry level version has a 1.4 litre petrol engine and delivers 95 bhp and which will power the car from rest to 62 mph in 11.6 seconds whilst delivering a very economical 52 mph.

Once you step up to the Mini Clubman Cooper you can opt for 1.6 litre petrol engine which delivers120bhp and has a 0 to 62mph time of 9.8 seconds. This is also available in a turbocharged version which will deliver 175 bhp and which will reach 62 mph from rest in just 7.6 seconds whist have an average fuel consumption of 45 mpg. This is a very sporty car and it is really fun to drive. There is also a diesel version which delivers 69 mpg. There is a choice of a six speed manual or a six speed diesel gearbox.

All the MINIs are good fun to drive, but the MINI Clubman Cooper is particularly good fun. You might think that the boxy looking rear of this car would affect the corning adversely, but you would be mistaken. You can really push this car through the country lanes and power it round the tightest of bends confident that it will stick to the road. There is good feedback from the steering and the suspension and even in the wet it is a great drive, helped no doubt by the lack of any rear overhang and its relatively longer wheel base.

Naturally there is more storage space than in a standard MINI and when you fold down the rear seats there are 930 litres of it. There is nothing not to like about this car, and if you are in the market for a small hatch, then this could be a great alternative.

You have passed your test, have the experience and now feel its time to upgrade the little run around to the real deal and the real deal to most car lovers is a sports car.

However before browsing the showroom you should first complete a little research, for example what type of model will suit your needs, which sport cars are more economical than others, whether to invest in a brand new or second hand car, how much the maintenance of such a vehicle will come to and of course how much the insurance quote will be.

The insurance company endsleigh.co.uk offer a few options online regarding an assortment of different policies, whether you are looking for a price guarantee policy, zero no claims or student discounts.

An important factor to consider is your budget, this should be identified prior to even looking at a new sports car as otherwise you may fall into the trap of buying a vehicle you simply are unable to afford.

Looking into different insurance policies is always a good option as many offer different rates, for example compulsory third party car insurance is often a lot less than purchasing your own car insurance out right, especially if you are under 25 years of age.

Once you have researched all there is to research about insurance and you know your budget then you can begin to look at the various models available. Being smart and choosing a vehicle that suits your lifestyle will pay off in the long run, for example if you have a large family or a lot of friends, a two seated vehicle may be the wrong option, however an all-new sports Range Rover with ample space would be the perfect sporty alternative!
